5 Great Forests: New publication – Market Profile and Basic Grain Chains in Wampusirpi, Honduras

For the full publication (in Spanish) please see here

This report presents a profile of the regional value chain of basic grains (beans and rice), along with strategic information about their current and potential markets. It was developed based on available secondary information, semi-structured interviews with 6 key informants, and 2 focus groups with bean and rice producers from the region of interest. Annex 1 presents the list of organizations interviewed.
The report is part of the products of the EU DeSIRA project: “Five Great Forests of Mesoamerica: A regional initiative for climate, biodiversity, and people,” led by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which aims to build a replicable model to transform agriculture and food systems and protect intact forest ecosystems in the Five Great Forests of Mesoamerica.
In Honduras, WCS has been working to strengthen the livelihoods of communities in the Mosquitia area as a tool to reduce pressure on forests and promote their conservation. Among the economic activities prioritized by communities and regional actors to achieve these goals, the production of basic grains stands out. These grains are part of the government’s and international cooperation’s efforts to improve the economy, food security, and living conditions of the territory.
The Alliance Bioversity International and CIAT, as co-implementers of the project, seek to contribute to these efforts through the analysis of productive alternatives and value chains with greater potential for the region, describing their operation and identifying the main opportunities, challenges, and threats, with an emphasis on market-related components.
