This report is part of the products of the EU DeSIRA project: “Five Great Forests of Mesoamerica: A Regional Initiative for Climate, Biodiversity, and People,” led by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). It presents the findings of an analysis and prioritization exercise of sustainable production alternatives to be strengthened with the communities of the Man and the Biosphere Reserve of the Río Plátano (RHBRP) in the Honduran Mosquitia, particularly in the municipality of Wampusirpi.
The report provides an analysis and rating of seven production alternatives against seven evaluation criteria, aimed at identifying their market potential and alignment with environmental and social objectives, as well as their main opportunities and limitations. The selected alternatives were basic grains (beans and rice), cocoa, allspice (pimienta dioica), non-mahogany woods, swá oil (Carapa guianensis Aubl, Meliaceae), Tuno crafts (Castilla tuno H.), and fruit trees. The criteria for evaluating these alternatives included their market potential, community preferences, income generation potential, environmental compatibility and synergies, social equity, enabling environment, and potential for improving nutrition.
