On 22 April 2024, a new project, Enhancement of the National Soil Information System (NSIS) of Ethiopia, held its internal kick-off meeting online.
The project, supported by the IFDC Soils Consortium, aims to enhance and develop Ethiopia’s National Soil Information System (NSIS) at all levels of soil information system workflows. The goal is to ensure sustainability, accessibility, and usability for a wide range of soil data and information users. The project is being implemented by the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and ISRIC—World Soil Information.
The program for the Ethiopia NSIS launch event included the following distinguished speakers:
- H.E Prof Eyasu Elias, Ethiopia Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), State minister
- Rik van den Bosch, ISRIC-World Soil Information, Director
- Mr Kiflu Gudeta, Ethiopia MoA, Soil Survey and Mapping Desk, Head
- Luis Calisto, ISRIC –NSIS project lead
- Andries Bosma, ISRIC, External Relations Manager
Following the virtual kick-off launch, the NSIS project team met on 17-28 June in ISRIC’s office in Wageningen, Netherlands. This visit marked the first Ethiopian mission and focused on technical project assessment.

NSIS is supported by the USAID-BRFS-funded Feed the Future Soil Fertility Technology Adoption, Policy Reform, and Knowledge Management (RFS-SFT) –Sustainable Opportunities for Improving Livelihoods with Soils Consortium (SOILS-C) managed by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC).
